Youth Safety Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Many of our volunteers are students. This policy explains the expectations that protect minors while they serve through Hands of Jesus.

Admin reminder: These policies are starter drafts written in plain language. Before a large public launch, have them reviewed by a qualified adult advisor or attorney to ensure they fit your jurisdiction, partners, and insurance requirements.

Our role

Hands of Jesus is a platform that helps students find volunteer opportunities. We do not independently supervise every event, and we are not on-site at every project. The host organization for each event is responsible for supervision, screening of adult volunteers and staff, training, and safety on the day of the event.

Parent and guardian permission

Minors may need parent or guardian permission to participate in an opportunity. Signup forms may ask for a guardian's name, phone, or email so a host organization can confirm consent and reach a parent in an emergency. Volunteers and chapter leaders should follow the specific consent, waiver, and background-check rules of their school, church, or host organization.

Expectations for host organizations

  • Provide qualified adult supervision appropriate to the number and age of youth volunteers.
  • Screen adult staff and volunteers who will work directly with minors, following applicable local law and best practices.
  • Give volunteers clear on-site instructions, safety briefings, and emergency procedures.
  • Never leave a minor alone with an unscreened adult.
  • Follow all mandatory-reporting laws and act immediately on any safety concern.

Expectations for chapter leaders

  • Follow your school, church, or sponsor's policies on youth activities, transportation, and chaperones.
  • Coordinate with a school advisor, pastor, or adult sponsor for events involving minors.
  • Do not organize private, unsupervised events under the Hands of Jesus name.

Expectations for volunteers and families

  • Read the opportunity details carefully and ask the host questions before signing up.
  • Confirm transportation, drop-off, pick-up, and adult supervision before the event.
  • Use the buddy system. Do not go off alone with an adult you do not know.
  • Tell a trusted adult right away if something feels unsafe.

Privacy for minors

We do not publicly display minors' contact information. Signup details are shared only with the host organization for that event and with Hands of Jesus admins for moderation. See our Privacy Policy for more.

Reporting a concern

If you experience or witness anything that puts a young person at risk, contact local authorities immediately. You can also email us at hello@handsofjesus.org so we can review the listing and, when appropriate, remove it or the organization from the platform.

Publication is not a safety guarantee

Listing an opportunity on Hands of Jesus is not a guarantee of complete safety or suitability for every volunteer. Please use good judgment and follow your school, church, or family's rules.

This page is written in plain language to help volunteers, families, and partners understand how Hands of Jesus works. It does not constitute individualized legal advice. Questions? Email hello@handsofjesus.org.
